Four different sounds mean four different things, and mixing them up is easy.

- Rumbling or gurgling: heavier sediment buildup than popping alone suggests. Left unchecked, this often precedes tank failure.

A valve that's currently drip-free and passing the lever test has a shelf life of its own. Several sources recommend replacing the pressure relief valve every 3 to 5 years as preventative practice, independent of whether it's currently showing problems. A valve nearing end-of-life can look fine right up until it fails.
Rust-coloured water, ceiling stains, and other signs you can see
Brown or rusty hot water is one of the clearest signs available. It means internal tank corrosion has already started, and it won't fix itself.
Outside the geyser, the thick white 50mm PVC overflow pipe is worth checking directly. An occasional drip from it is normal, part of the pressure valve doing its job during a heating cycle. Hard, constant dripping from that same pipe lines up with the failing-valve pattern described above.
Inside the roof space or cupboard housing the tank, watch for:
- A bulging or swollen tank casing
